Every Day Matters: Our Commitment to Attendance

At Te Uho o te Nikau School, we believe that every day a student spends in the classroom is an investment in their future. Consistent attendance is not just about academic success; it is about building friendships, developing a sense of belonging, and fostering the habits that lead to lifelong achievement.

Our Shared Goal

In line with the Government’s national targets, our Board of Trustees has set a strategic goal to achieve 80% regular attendance (students attending more than 90% of the time) by the end of 2026. To reach this, we need to work together as a community.

Why Attendance is Important

  • Learning Momentum: New concepts are built on previous lessons. Missing a day can create gaps in understanding that are difficult to bridge.
  • Social Connection: Regular attendance helps students maintain strong peer relationships and feel connected to our school culture.
  • Preparation for Life: Punctuality and reliability are essential life skills that begin in the primary years.

How We Support Our Families

We understand that life happens. Our Stepped Attendance Response (STAR) framework is designed to be a supportive tool, not a punitive one. If your child’s attendance begins to drop, we will reach out early to see how we can help. Whether it is health concerns, anxiety, or logistical barriers, we are committed to working with you to find a solution.

What You Can Do

  • Prioritize School: Aim for 100% attendance, reserving absences only for genuine illness or emergencies.
  • Communicate Early: Please notify the school office via Hero or phone by 8:30 AM if your child will be absent.
  • Plan Ahead: Where possible, please schedule medical appointments and family holidays outside of term time.

Together, let’s ensure every child at Te Uho o te Nikau School has the opportunity to thrive.
